2023 Freelance Writing Predictions

Wondering what’s going to change with freelancing this year? Here are my top three predictions for freelance writers and other gig workers and side hustlers in 2023.

Economic Winners and Losers

First, I think there are going to be economic winners and losers. And just because an industry isn't performing well doesn't mean that they're not willing to invest in their marketing and freelancing. So I think it's important for freelancers to stay on top of the news and find opportunities and creative ways to serve people who are both doing well, but also those who might be willing to put more money into new initiatives in order to help their businesses.

Savings Buffer is a Must

I think some companies are going to financially struggle in 2023, and as a freelancer, that means it's really important to keep a savings buffer. You might have a client who suddenly stops paying or slows down on the payment process, and it's good to cover your bases and be prepared for that to happen.

Scams on the Rise

Finally, I do think freelancing scams seem to be on the rise. Do your due diligence, trust your gut, and network with other freelancers. I've heard of a lot of really in depth hiring processes that seem totally legit only to wind up being fake or someone looking for bank account information.

It’s smart to double down on background checks and networking. If you’re unsure, talk to other people and see if they've experienced similar outreach from potentially fake companies.

Overall, I think 2023 is going to continue to be a great year for freelancers! Remember to pitch consistently, and I hope you all have a great year in your businesses!
